II. Main Part of the lesson
Procedure
4). Homework check: “Scat the Cat” story (7 minutes)
Materials and supplies: File folder “Scat the Cat” ~ Ps.
Once there was a little black cat. (Hold up the file folder showing the black cat.) He was a magic cat because he could change his colors ~ (snap fingers) ~ just like that.
All he had to say was:
CHORUS: I’m Scat the Cat. I’m sassy and fat. And I can change my colors ~ (snap) ~ just like that!
One day Scat decided he was tired of being black. He wanted to be a new color so he said:
CHORUS. (Remove the black sheet of paper to make the cat blue.) And he changed blue!
Scat went down to the pond to look at himself in the water. Unfortunately, he fell in, and he couldn’t swim. Timmy Turtle came along and helped Scat get back on shore. Scat decided he didn’t want to be blue anymore, so he said:
CHORUS. (Remove the blue sheet of paper to make the cat red.) And he changed red.
He went walking down the street, and everybody started laughing at him. “Whoever heard of a red cat!” they said. Scat decided he didn’t want to be red anymore, so he said:
CHORUS. (Remove the red sheet of paper to make the cat yellow.) And he changed yellow.
Scat went walking in the woods, and who did he run into but his cousin Leo the lion. “Grrrrrr!” roared Leo. “I’m the only cat who can be yellow.” Scat decided he better not be yellow anymore, and he quickly said:
CHORUS. (Remove the yellow sheet of paper to make the cat green.) And he changed green
Scat wanted to play with his brothers and sisters in the grass. He tried to play with them, but he was green like the grass, and they couldn’t see him. Scat decided he didn’t want to be blue, or red, or yellow, or green, so he said:
CHORUS. (Remove the green sheet of paper to make the cat black.)
Scat knew that being himself was the best thing to be. And do you know what? Being yourself is the best thing you can be, too. Because there’s nobody else exactly like you. And I like you just the way you are!
Pupils take turns to retell the story they have read previously. Not everybody is expected to retell the story only those who want. Others may only say the words of Scat the cat “I’m Scat the cat, I’m sassy and fat and I can change my colors - just like that!”
Conclusion “You are unique, you are special! The more different you are the more interesting the world around us is.”
5). Exposure to new communication structures (7 minutes)
You are good storytellers. You can do it well. You are good at telling stories. Now we are going to learn how to use be good at … and be bad at…
On the board, there are 2 pictures of 2 different people - a child who cannot swim well and a proficient swimmer.
T. use the questions to elicit the new communication structures: be good at… and be bad at…
Look! This is Kate.
Can she swim? (Yes, she can.)
How do you know this? (She smiles. She is happy.)
So she can swim well. She is good at swimming.
Look at this boy!
Can he swim? (No, he can’t.)
Why do you think so? (Because he needs the help of his dad/teacher… of an adult.)
So he can’t swim well. He is bad at swimming.
If you can do something well you may say I’m good at… I’m pretty good at… I’m great at…
If you can’t do whatever well, then you may say I’m bad at… I’m very bad at… I’m terrible at…
Some more examples will follow. T. tells the class about what he/ she is good/ bad at… Then some pupils may try these structures telling about their abilities.
6). Watching a short video Activity (10 minutes)
Pupils watch the video twice.
Pre-watching task
What do you think this video is about? P. predict what the video is about.
Before the first watching, some questions are offered to pupils. They should answer them after watching.
What are the children’s names? (Anna, Sam, and Tom)
What are they playing? (basketball and football)
While watching the second time, they fill in the tables choosing the needed information.
After watching, we check the results.
7). Relaxation (2 minutes)
Materials and supplies: Macarena Song “Count to 100” T. ~ Ps. (All together)
8). Speaking (7 minutes)
What are you good at?
I’m good at….
What is she/ he good at?
She/ he is good at…
Some pupils tell the class what they are good at and present the results of their activity. It may be a photo, a collection, a certificate of achievement or a skill demonstration. Other pupils will get prepared to do the same thing.
III. summarising of the lesson(7 minutes)
9). Home Assignment
I'm not going to set any homework because your autumn holidays begin tomorrow. But if someone wants he may get prepared to talk about what he is good at and present the results of his/her achievements.
10). Evaluation
Well done!!! Today you were absolutely fantastic. You were good at retelling the story and at making sentences. Way to go!
I’m proud of you… You were brilliant today. You’ve used properly the new learned structures: good at… bad at… See you next time!
11). Goodbye Song
Goodbye friends, goodbye friends,
Time to go, time to go,
Thank you for learning.
Thank you for loving.
Love you so! Love you so!
